III. Main part
I. Reading
a)
pre-reading
-Can
you say that your school is your “ second home”? Why ? Why not?
-Here are some ideas expressed by Melbourne school students in their
composition “ The School That I’d Like”
1 .Look through the following compositions , choose one of them which
is to your liking and present it as if it were your own ( introduce
yourself, say a few words about your likes and dislikes and speak on
the topic “ The School That I ‘d Like”
b)while-reading
Write
out some notes( uniform, school rules , discipline , etc).
c)
post-reading
Take
part in the debate.
Suggested
motions:
-pupils
should be allowed to dress in the manner they feel comfortable;
-school
rules should be flexible;
-there
should be freedom of attendance in school , etc,
Use
the expressions: I think, I agree/ don’t agree, To my opinion, You
have got a point, but;
1. I’d like a modern school with large grounds and shady gardens set
aside for studying and recesses. There should be a lot of nice –looking
litter bins and fines for dropping rubbish. Sporting facilities should
be plentiful and a lot of clubs should be established. There should
be a student council who makes the rules and gives punishments and the
teachers should be well qualified. We should be able to choose our careers
and have subject that specialize in them . Instead of studying things
that won’t be worthwhile school would have: modern buildings, young
headmistress and teachers, good sporting things, rules but not so strict,
uniforms but very nice ones, blazers that would fit well instead of
being baggy, big grounds and ovals , friendly atmosphere , casual appearance,
stable, riding lessons available, swimming pool.
- I would like a small school, all on one level , and with only 200 or so pupils. It would not be
open classroom, but not extremely strict. The teachers would teach for
half lesson , and for the next part , there would be discussions
on the subjects , where you could discuss freely any aspect of the subject.
The teacher would not force their ideas on to the pupils, but present
them as part of a discussion. It should be possible to do useful subjects,
e.g. Craft, Home Economics, Woodwork, etc, without having to drop another
subject to fit it in.
- At school I would like to be able to express my opinion
in essay form as well as talking. I would like to study Psychology and
Politics, people , etc, which you can’t study at school. I would like school to be more
like University where you go to discussions , lectures , etc, I like that kind of set-up rather
than set timetables and lessons. I think the whole education system
should be created and rearranged to suit the individual rather than
the mass mob, and people’s abilities in certain fields.
