Father's day.
The third Sunday in June is Father's day. Many people have the misconception that this holiday was created by greeting card companies that wanted to sell more cards. In fact it was first proposed by Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father. Mrs. Dodd's father was William Smart. He was Civil War veteran, who was widower when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart raised this baby and five other children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington State. As an adult, Mrs. Dodd realized that her father had great selflessness in raising his children as a single parent. After Mrs. Dodd's idea to honor her father, President Calvin Coolidge supported a national holiday to honor fathers in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation to observe Father's Day in June. Father's Day has become a day to honor not only fathers, but any stepfather, uncle,or adult male who takes the role of a father.
