       Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stradford-on-Avon. He was the son of a Stradford businessman and went to the local grammar school. In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway. They had three children. We know that Shakespeare left Stradford in about 1585. But no one knows where he went or what he did for the next five years. In September 1592 we know that he lived and worked in London as a playwright and as an actor at the Globe Theatre. He is not on the actor-list after 1603 so he probably stopped acting at this time because he was already famous for his writing.

       He wrote his first play, Henry VI, in 1590. Shakespeare  also wrote a number of poems. He finished his last play, “The Tempest”, in 1612. After that he left London and went back to live in Stradford. He died in 1616. His plays are very successful today.
