The Romanovs in Yekaterinburg

This is the place where the family of the last Russian tsar Nikolai II was shot down at night between the 16th and 17th of July of 1918. These tragic events took place in the house of engineer Ipatiev, which was situated here. The house was ruined in 1977 by the order of the local government: too many people were interested in the history of the house.

The family of the last Russian tsar (Nikolai himself, his wife Alexandra, four their daughters: Olga, Tatyana, Anastasiya and Maria and their son Aleksey – the heir of the Russian throne) were brought to Yekaterinburg in May of 1918 from the exile in Tobolsk to Moscow.

The white guards, which planned to set the family free, were coming closer and closer to the city. Under existing conditions the government ordered to shot down the family.

Seven members of the family, one doctor and three servants were shot down in the cellar of the house. Their corpses were taken away from the city and carefully hidden.

There are a great number of versions of the death’s history of the Romanovs family.

In 1991 the grave of the family was found not far to the north from Yekaterinburg near the Koptyaki road.

9 corpses were found (the corpses of Maria and Aleksey were not found) in a big pit, covered with clay, soil, branches of the trees. They were examined for a long time in our country, in the USA, Great Britain, and Germany. Different kinds of genetic and medical findings were conducted. Most of them are sure that these are the corpses of the tsars’ family, but not all of them.

Now a new burial place of the family has been chosen. The family is reburied in St.Petersburg.

Nowadays on the place of the murder has been built The Temple- Memorial on the Blood.
